Why You Should Clean Your Oven as Part of Spring Cleaning

Many people take their ovens for granted, sometimes to the point where they can go for years without a proper cleaning. That’s why spring is a good time to clean your oven as well as everything else in your home. A clean oven is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it also lasts longer and is safer to operate than an oven that has years’ worth of built-up gunk. Here’s how to deep clean your oven like a pro.

Gather Your Supplies

First, clear a space around the oven to work and gather all the tools you’ll need to deep clean. Make sure the area is well-ventilated. This means you might need to open a window, especially if you have to resort to using harsh cleansers. What you’ll need to have on hand is:

  • A bucket
  • Paper towels or clean rags
  • Sponges
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water, both clean and soapy

Unplug the Oven

Unplug the oven or, if the plug isn’t easily accessible, turn off the power at the circuit box. Make sure the oven is cool before starting to clean it. Then, take out the racks.

Wash the Racks

Wash the racks in lukewarm, soapy water in the kitchen sink. If they’re very grungy, you may need to soak them overnight. Make a paste of baking soda and vinegar, and then scrub them with it. You can also sprinkle baking soda over the racks and pour the vinegar over them to create a foam. Then, partially fill a bathtub with warm soapy water, and put the racks in.

Clean the Inside of the Oven

In the meantime, use the baking soda and vinegar paste to clean the inside of the oven, or make a fresh batch. Use rags or paper towels to coat the interior, then let it sit overnight while the racks are soaking.

Clean the Oven Door

Use a sponge or magic eraser dipped in clean water to clean the oven door. Make sure you clean the gaskets, too. All you need is window cleaner to clean the door window.

Clean the Racks and Oven Interior

Use clean water and a sponge to wipe away grime on the racks and oven interior after they’ve sat overnight. Keep rinsing and wiping with sponges and rags until the racks and interior are sparkling clean. Then, return the racks to the oven, and scrub and wipe down all the knobs and the door handle. If all else fails and you need to use an oven cleaner, follow the instructions to the letter.
